Hospice of Homer is a non-profit community outreach volunteer program. Volunteers are the Heart and Feet of Hospice. Without volunteers HOH could not provide the services that we do. For each volunteer position, the applicant receives orientation, training and ongoing education. Below is a list of volunteer opportunities:

Direct Care Volunteer

Direct Care Volunteers provide non-medical practical assistance to clients, and their families, at the client’s residence (including assisted living residences, long term care or the hospital). Direct care volunteers offer (to list a few things) friendly visits, respite for the primary caregiver, transportation, home maintenance, food preparation, house cleaning, and emotional support. Volunteers commit to two - four hours per week for one year. These volunteers are trained and given support and supervision by HOH staff. HOH presents a 20-24 hour end of life volunteer training usually in October.

Visitor Volunteers/Phone Friend Volunteer

Visitor Volunteers/Phone Friends Volunteers provide friendly visits to elders in the community who are less mobile and in need of companionship. These volunteers visit, read out loud, assist with food preparation and offer emotional support. Volunteers commit to two - four hours per week for one year. These volunteers are trained and given support and supervision by HOH staff. HOH presents a 20-24 hour end of life volunteer training usually in March.

Office Support Volunteers

Office Support Volunteers perform a variety of tasks at the HOH office. Volunteers help with mailings and other administrative tasks, answer phones, etc. as well as assist with the medical equipment loan program. Computer experience is preferred. Training takes place as needed. Hour commitment varies.

Movers and Shaker Volunteers

Movers and Shaker Volunteers help transport, assemble and set up the medical equipment that HOH loans to community members. The also help with general home maintenance and upkeep. Training takes place as needed. Hour commitment varies.

Chefs of the Heart

Chefs of the Heart cook delicious and healthy food with love for clients and their families. Usually the food is purchased and prepared by the volunteer and taken to the person’s home. Hour commitment varies.

Green Thumb Brigade

The Green Thumb Brigade helps maintain the Hospice of Homer Memorial Garden located at the WFKL Park. This involves cleaning the garden in the spring, weeded and watering during the season and in the fall preparing the garden for the winter. Hour commitment varies.

Fundraising Volunteers

Fundraising Volunteers help with fundraising events by selling raffle tickets, delivering candy, staffing booths, decorating for an event, etc. Hour commitment varies.

Hospice of Homer Board of Directors

The Hospice of Homer Board of Directors acts as the governing body of the organization. Board meetings take place once per month usually for one hour. Board members are involved in a variety of committees and activities.
